Water Shortage In Yendi Disrupting Easter Celebrations

Image
Water shortage has hit Yendi and its surrounding villages due to the drying up of River Dakar the main source of water for the Yendi Municipality. The raw water cannot be extracted any longer due to the exposure of the top intake strainer and silting of the bottom intake leaving only the middle intake in operation which cannot supply raw water to the required capacity. Yendi is therefore left without adequate raw water supply. Mr Adam Sayibu, the Yendi Municipal Water Company Manager was briefing the Regent of Dagbon Kampakuya Na Andani Yakubu Abdulai at the Gbewaa palace at Yendi on the water situation in the Municipality. He said the main source of water for Yendi Municipality was treated water from the Yendi water plant abstracted from the river Dakar noting that there were no boreholes fitted with hand pumps within the Yendi town. Mr Sayibu explained that it was as a result of delayed rains, which could worsen if the situation did not improve within five days. He said

'Sack teachers who date students'

Image
Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to sack and revoke certificates of teachers who sexually abuse students. He also suggested that such teachers be jailed, banned from government employment and also made to compensate their victims. These sanctions, he said, if introduced by the MoE and the GES, will help to deal with the current canker in the teaching profession and also serve as a deterrent to others. Speaking in an interaction with Adehye FM's Elisha Adarkwah at the inauguration of a six-unit classroom block which he built at Kronum Kwapra in the Suame constituency, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu attributed the rise in sexual abuse and harassment of students by some teachers and headmasters to the ineffectiveness of the inspectorate division of the GES. He, therefore, called for the inspectorate division to be proactive to monitor teachers and students at all times. Source: ClassFMonline

Brooding With our baskets we have gathered, A burnt offering to pray, As our tears soak the mud of the earth, When famine used us as prey, An emptied belly tank we took to bed; Where we stood in a queue at the cemetery doorway, Till the young generation dream their dead, On our knees a written prayer lay, From the incantations and blood pouring red; In welcoming a bread half a mile away, Wailing upon a dream said; Till we will hold a grain on a day, And a trumpet blown over our triumph ahead. @jcsonjenuis

Contraceptive Pill For Men Is Almost Done – But Will Men Remember To Take It?

Image
A contraceptive pill for men has come a step closer to development. Taken daily like the female Pill, it switches off a man’s testosterone and the hormones that cause sperm production. This should bring the sperm count low enough so that a man cannot get his partner pregnant. Researchers who gave the tablet to men for a month said it did not cause liver damage – a side effect shown in previous trials of oral hormonal contraceptives. Past attempts to give men contraception have focused on injections or gels, but experts say men may find it easier to take a pill. While there is a fear men may forget to take the tablets, researchers hope this can be addressed by a longer-lasting ingredient that means they can be taken daily rather than twice a day as with previous versions. A 2011 survey found half of women would not rely on a male pill because they did not trust their partners to remember to take it. A team led by the University of Washington has trialled the male pill o
