Thirty landlords in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, who refused a directive to construct toilets in their homes, have been put before court for sanitation offences. They have all pleaded not guilty and were granted 2,000-cedi bail each. They will reappear on September 20. Prosecuting officer, Saani Mohammed, told the court the landlords who have no toilet facilities in their houses, were given two months ultimatum to construct one but they failed to do so. He explained that the Assembly through the environmental health department constantly engaged residents in the Tamale metropolis on issues of sanitation, including the need for household latrines. Mr Mohammed stated “The Assembly through its partners UNICEF and others have done a lot to get landlords to put up latrines but this has fallen on deaf ears” Environmental health officers of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in the course of their routine checks at Lamashegu, Kobilhimagu and Zogbeli communities found that ...

Why You Will Pay 18.1% More For Water

Image
Customers of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) will see an 18.1 per cent increment on their bills from July 1, this year. This follows an 8.1 per cent increment in water tariff and the restoration of a 10 per cent levy to run the Teshie Water Desalination Plant. That levy was waived when the plant shut down its operations last year. The depreciation of the Ghana cedi and inflation have been cited as the factors that necessitated the tariff increment. In arriving at the new tariff, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), the regulatory body that sets utility tariffs, restored the 10 per cent line item charged to run the Teshie Water Desalination Plant, before slapping the substantive increment necessitated by inflation and exchange rate losses. The upward adjustment in water tariffs on Monday comes barely four days after the PURC approved an 11.17 per cent increase in electricity tariffs. The Executive Secretary of the PURC, Mami Dufie Ofori, who announced th...

Image
The work of ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has always been a dangerous one; his methodology has helped in blowing the cover of the 'bad' people in the society. Ghanaians always get to know the end product to his undercover investigations but what actually goes into the work, nobody knows. Speaking at the 3rd Africa Leadership Conference dubbed ‘Africa Rising 3’ Anas Aremeyaw Anas revealed that his manhood didn’t work for a while after his investigations “Inside Ghana’s Madhouse”. The youth are engaged in all sorts of bad activities because they see him as their role model and blindly copy what he does,” he told Showbiz in an interview on Saturday, April 13. Coffee Not Essential For Life

Image
The Swiss government wants to put an end to its emergency stockpile of coffee after declaring that it is "not essential" for human survival. Switzerland began storing emergency reserves of coffee between World War One and World War Two in preparation for potential shortages. It continued in subsequent decades to combat shortages sparked by war, natural disasters or epidemics. It now hopes to end the practice by late 2022. But opposition is mounting. It currently has 15,300 tonnes saved up - that's enough to last the country three months. Why stop this? The government now says coffee is "not essential for life" so doesn't need to be included in the emergency reserves. "Coffee has almost no calories and subsequently does not contribute, from the physiological perspective, to safeguarding nutrition," the Federal Office for National Economic Supply said (in German). Image
Advertisements on many herbal and orthodox medicines, as well as herbal-based alcoholic beverages, have become common these days, with messages in the advertisements promising aphrodisiac powers for men and slimming effects for women. Dr Bawumia Needs To Go Back To Hajj And Pray For Forgiveness— Mzbel

Image
The reputation of an economical guru that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had built for himself whilst in opposition has completely evaporated since the NPP came into power and he actually had to run the economy. The cedi has completely exposed Bawumia, forcing him to hold a briefing on Wednesday in which he tried to convince Ghanaians that the depreciating cedi does not show that the fundamentals of the economy is weak as he himself told us. That mental gymnastics that he tried to do has been widely mocked by Ghanaians, and rightly so. This practice where politicians say one thing whilst in opposition and say exactly the opposite once they get into power and expect Ghanaians to believe them must be mocked every time it occurs. Mzbel, a staunch NDC supporter, is one of those mocking Bawumia over his speech. In a post on Facebook, the singer born Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah shared a portion of Bawumia’s speech and said he needs to ask God for forgiveness for lying to Ghanaians. ...
