Abdel Razaq Zorgi, a 32-year-old journalist has died after setting himself on fire over harsh living conditions in Tunisia. His death sparked protests in the city after dark and clashes overnight with police who fired tear gas at dozens of people who had set tyres ablaze and blocked the main street. Six members of the security forces were injured and nine protesters were detained, interior ministry spokesperson Sofiane al-Zaq said but after a brief morning calm, protesters were back on the streets of Kasserine in the afternoon after Zorgi’s funeral. Authorities also deployed reinforcements on the main streets of Kasserine, 270 kilometres (165 miles) from the capital Tunis. “For the sons of Kasserine who have no means of subsistence, today I start a revolution. A woman believed to be a Togolese, on Thursday, died on board a Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) bus she was travelling in from Koforidua to Aflao, en-route Lome, Togo. The deceased, who was travelling alone, was called only as Victoria, aged 34. Other details about her were not immediately available. An eye-witness told the GNA at Aflao that the deceased, who looked healthy, joined the bus with registration number, GW 1506 Y, which set off at dawn with other passengers on that Thursday, December 27, this year, from its Koforidua terminal. The witness said after a brief stopover at the transportation company’s Sokode-Lokoe terminal, near the Ho Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office, at about 0750 hours, the bus continued the Aflao bound journey. A woman in her late forties (name withheld) has been stripped naked for allegedly stealing four fowls at Dua Yaw Nkwanta on the Brong Ahafo region. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 25, 2018. A local reporter narrating the incident on Accra based rainbow Radio, said it took the intervention of some good Samaritans before the woman was rescued. He indicated that the woman was not only stripped naked but assaulted by the individuals who claimed were owners of the stolen fowls. The incident is currently under investigation.                                   Convict Kwabena Adjei The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced a 20-year-old unemployed man, Kwabena Adjei, to 14 years’ imprisonment for stealing a Samsung Galaxy J7 phone worth GH¢1,200 at Poano, near Anwiankwanta. The man, who has previously served jail term, was convicted by the court on his plea. He was charged with unlawful entry and stealing, contrary to sections 152 and 124(1) of Act 29/60. The court, presided over by Fredrick Nawura, sentenced him to 14 years’ imprisonment in hard labour on each count. The sentences are to run concurrently. He admitted stealing the phone from the complainant’s room on November 5, 2018 at about 5:30 am and selling it to someone for GH¢700 about three weeks later. The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says a single dose of 75 milligrams (mg) of tramadol can produce euphoria similar to heroin and therefore poses serious danger to public health. The Authority is concerned that despite the increased public education about the dangers, there were still unapproved quantities of the drug sold in the open market. “The FDA has approved only two different doses of the medicine, the 50mg and 100mg for sale,’ Mr Albert Ankomah, FDA Upper West Regional Head, said in a speech read on his behalf at a road safety campaign in Nandom. “It is however, evident that unapproved doses such as the 120mg and 225mg are being sold on the streets. An Aflao Circuit Court has sentenced three armed robbers to a total of 176 years’ imprisonment in hard labour. The verdicts on three separate incidents are considered a breakthrough against crime in the area. The convicts, Julius Gbede alias “Bible”, 25, got a total of 82 years; Kofi Kunya alias “Sponsor”, 27, 79 years and Malik Mohammed Urmaru Suna, 24, 15 years. According to police sources Gbede, who is considered leader of the group in all the three incidents, pleaded not guilty to three counts of conspiracy, stealing, preparation to commit crime, illegal possession of firearms, causing harm, unlawful damage, unlawful entry and two counts of robbery. Three young men from Kumasi, including a teenager, who went to swim at the Nungua Shinning Beach whilst visiting Accra to attend a wedding ceremony, reportedly drowned last Sunday. The victims, whose identities are yet to be known, were part of a team of 20 people who travelled from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to attend a wedding in Accra. Before the wedding, the victims, aged between 17 and 22, joined their friends to go to Nungua Shinning Beach to swim but reportedly drowned in the process. The bodies of the three are yet to be found. 17-year-old first-year student of a Senior High School in Koforidua in the Eastern region has been defiled at knifepoint in the School’s bathroom. The victim(name withheld) was allegedly defiled at night by an intruder when she went to the bathroom to change her pad after prep since she was menstruating Thursday. The suspect is believed to have scaled over the main wall of the school and the Girls Dormitory to commit the crime. The Victim has since been examined and treated by a gynaecologist at the Eastern Regional Hospital after a medical form was issued upon report at the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU). The medical report, according to Superintendent Eunice Annor, the Regional Officer in Charge of DOVVSU indicates a broken hymen. Meanwhile, one intruder found days later after the incident wondering on campus has been arrested to assist in investigations.
