Appiatse Explosion: Gov't Imposes A $6m Fine On Maxam

 Government has imposed a fine of $6 million on Maxam Ghana Limited, the company at the centre of the explosion that occurred at Appiate in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region, which killed some 13 people and destroyed the entire community. This was disclosed by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor on Monday, February 7, 2022. According to a press statement issued by the Minister, the amount is made up of $1 million fine and $5 million, which the company agreed with the Ministry, after extensive discussions, to pay to the government. The statement said the fine was imposed after the report of the three-member committee constituted by the Minister to undertake independent investigations into the matter affirmed some regulatory breaches on the part of the company, in the manufacture, storage and transportation of explosives for mining and other civil works. Police officer crushed to death in line of duty

A Policewoman has been crushed to death while on duty at the Gomoa Potsin checkpoint in the Central Region. The deceased, identified as Comfort Freby, was stationed at the Gomoa Dominase Police Command and got married barely a year ago. Police sources indicate the incident occurred at about 3:00 am on Wednesday while she was with other colleagues. The suspect driver was reportedly driving a Toyota Fish passenger car with a registration number GS 4746-20 on top speed. The driver, who was travelling from Accra to Cape Coast, is said to have driven through a first checkpoint despite attempts by the patrol team to stop him. A signal, was then sent to the deceased and her colleagues who were at the checkpoint ahead to be on the lookout for the driver. However, he repeated his act and is said to have almost crashed the entire team to death but they narrowly escaped him. 56 percent of NPP supporters against E-Levy – Survey

 Despite the government’s intensified efforts in a bid to convince more Ghanaians to accept the imposition of the 1.75% Electronic Transaction Levy, a new survey suggests that 56 percent of self-confessed New Patriotic Party supporters sampled are against the unpopular policy. Meanwhile, 86 percent of self-confessed NDC supporters are against the e-levy. On average, 72 percent of respondents are against the e-levy, according to the survey by Global Info Analytics. The levy has been a hot topic since it was proposed by the government in the 2022 budget. Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Musa Danquah, said the survey shows cross-party opposition to the e-levy. “I wasn’t surprised, but what I was surprised by was, I was expecting it to be a bit higher than what we got,” Mr. Danquah said on the Citi Breakfast Show. UTAG/NLC In Court On Thursday As Public Universities Face Closure

 The National Labour Commission (NLC) and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) will appear in court on Thursday.  The NLC has sued UTAG for failing to comply with a directive to call off its strike. UTAG members across the country have laid down their tools to demand better conditions of service but the NLC declared their action illegal on January 13, 2022. Giving an update on discussions held so far, the President of UTAG, Dr Solomon Nunoo, said government has not made any effort to meet with them for negotiations.
