Brazilian man's far-popping eyes earn Guinness World Record

                            Tio Chico, the eye popping man   A Brazilian man with an unusual talent earned a Guinness World Record for popping his eyes 0.71 inches beyond his eye sockets. Guinness World Records announced Sidney de Carvalho Mesquita, aka Tio Chico, was awarded the world record title for the farthest eyeball pop (male) when he showed off his unusual ability to make his eyes protrude 0.71 inches out of their sockets. He said his skill was discovered in childhood, and his parents had originally feared it was a symptom of disease, but he was given a clean bill of health by doctors. "My skill is definitely a gift. Four siblings electrocuted after trying to steal electrical transmission wires

Tears flow as four siblings have been electrocuted after attempting to steal transmission cables. The Residents of Awoja Village in Soroti District, Uganda were thrown in a mourning when these four siblings were electrocuted on Monday morning November 28, 2022. Two of the siblings died instantly, while the other two were seriously injured and taken to hospital. SP Ageca Oscar Gregg, spokesman for the East Kyoga Regional Police, confirmed the incident and announced that the bodies of the two siblings would be released to the family for burial unless they received the report of doctor’s autopsy before handing it over. According to reports, Epou, 29, and his other brother Moses Atachu 28 years of age died instantly. The other two seriously injured people are Samuel Esuri, 23, and his younger brother, whose name has been withheld. World Bank: Ghana ranks 1st with highest food price increases of 122% in Sub-Saharan Africa

 Ghana is ranked 1st by the World Bank with the highest food prices in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2022. According to the Bretton Wood institution’s October 2022 Africa Pulse Report, food prices have since January 1, 2022, gone up by 122%. Since the start of 2022, food prices have increased sharply in many countries, largely due to the Russian/Ukraine war. According to the Food Price Index in Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana has recorded very sharp prices in food on the African continent. PURC announces 27.15% hike in electricity tariff, 21.55% for water

 The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 27.15% increase in tariff for electricity and 21.55% increase in water tariff effective September 1, 2022. This comes after utility companies including the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Company Limited proposed an increase in tariffs by 148% and 334% respectively. PURC however explains that the decision was arrived at after rigorous analysis and extensive consultations with industry players, as well as an assessment of the economic conditions of consumers. Addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, August 15, 2022, the Chairman of the PURC, Mr. Ebo Quagraine called on the public to support the utility companies to recoup revenues by reporting illegal connections.   The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into the alleged attack on Kofi Adoma Nwanwani, the Director of News at Accra-based Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN). The Service said it began investigating the case immediately it came to its attention.  The Police made this known in a brief press statement posted on its social media pages on Sunday, August 7.  “The Police are investigating alleged attacks by some unknown persons on Stephen Kofi Adomah, a staff of Angel Broadcasting Network on August 6, 2022, at Old Ashongman Village in Accra. Appiatse Explosion: Gov't Imposes A $6m Fine On Maxam

 Government has imposed a fine of $6 million on Maxam Ghana Limited, the company at the centre of the explosion that occurred at Appiate in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region, which killed some 13 people and destroyed the entire community. This was disclosed by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor on Monday, February 7, 2022. According to a press statement issued by the Minister, the amount is made up of $1 million fine and $5 million, which the company agreed with the Ministry, after extensive discussions, to pay to the government. The statement said the fine was imposed after the report of the three-member committee constituted by the Minister to undertake independent investigations into the matter affirmed some regulatory breaches on the part of the company, in the manufacture, storage and transportation of explosives for mining and other civil works. Police officer crushed to death in line of duty

A Policewoman has been crushed to death while on duty at the Gomoa Potsin checkpoint in the Central Region. The deceased, identified as Comfort Freby, was stationed at the Gomoa Dominase Police Command and got married barely a year ago. Police sources indicate the incident occurred at about 3:00 am on Wednesday while she was with other colleagues. The suspect driver was reportedly driving a Toyota Fish passenger car with a registration number GS 4746-20 on top speed. The driver, who was travelling from Accra to Cape Coast, is said to have driven through a first checkpoint despite attempts by the patrol team to stop him. A signal, was then sent to the deceased and her colleagues who were at the checkpoint ahead to be on the lookout for the driver. However, he repeated his act and is said to have almost crashed the entire team to death but they narrowly escaped him. 56 percent of NPP supporters against E-Levy – Survey

 Despite the government’s intensified efforts in a bid to convince more Ghanaians to accept the imposition of the 1.75% Electronic Transaction Levy, a new survey suggests that 56 percent of self-confessed New Patriotic Party supporters sampled are against the unpopular policy. Meanwhile, 86 percent of self-confessed NDC supporters are against the e-levy. On average, 72 percent of respondents are against the e-levy, according to the survey by Global Info Analytics. The levy has been a hot topic since it was proposed by the government in the 2022 budget. Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Musa Danquah, said the survey shows cross-party opposition to the e-levy. “I wasn’t surprised, but what I was surprised by was, I was expecting it to be a bit higher than what we got,” Mr. Danquah said on the Citi Breakfast Show. UTAG/NLC In Court On Thursday As Public Universities Face Closure

 The National Labour Commission (NLC) and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) will appear in court on Thursday.  The NLC has sued UTAG for failing to comply with a directive to call off its strike. UTAG members across the country have laid down their tools to demand better conditions of service but the NLC declared their action illegal on January 13, 2022. The Ghana Police Service has urged the family of the late Constable Regina Angenu of the Paga Police Station in the Upper East Region to remain calm as investigation is underway to get her murderers arrested to face justice. The Police Officer was shot dead on Sunday, 23 January 2022 at Bawku by some unknown persons. “We extend our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues and friends and also commiserate with them in this trying time,” a statement issued by the Police on Tuesday, 25 January 021 said. Constable Angenu died while off duty. She was shot by some unknown persons while on her motorbike to the Bawku Barracks. Ghana maintains position on Corruption Perception Index; fails to make progress

  The latest Corruption Perception Index released by Transparency International shows that Ghana has failed to make progress in its fight against corruption. The latest report shows that between 2020 and 2021, Ghana maintained its score of 43, which is still below the average, with countries scoring higher viewed as less corrupt and those with the least scores being more corrupt. “This CPI score indicates that, Ghana failed to make progress in the fight against corruption in the year 2021 as the score of 43 is the same as the country’s 2020 score,” said Ghana Integrity Initiative, the local chapter of Transparency International, in a statement. Although Ghana’s score is classified as low, it is still above the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 33. Per the latest report, Seychelles 70, in the rank of 180 countries, tops the region followed by Cabo Verde, ranked 58 and Botswana ranked 55. Policewoman shot dead by unknown assailants at Bawku

    A policewoman, Constable Regina Angenu of the Paga Police Station, has been shot dead by some unknown assailants at Bawku in the Upper East Region. The Police in a statement indicated that “at about 5:00 pm on Sunday, January 23, 2022, the deceased, PW/Constable Regina Angenu of Paga Police Station paid a visit to Const. Erasmus Enkson of Bawku Division MTTU.” On their way to Constable Enkson’s barracks, they were attacked by unknown assailants, and the policewoman was shot in the groin.  A former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye, has debunked claims that he was given military protection while serving as Speaker of the 7th Parliament of Ghana. His comments come on the back of reports that he was given military protection as Speaker of Parliament from 2017 to 2021; hence the current Speaker, Alban Bagbin, should also be given same. Over the weekend, news emerged that four military personnel protecting Mr. Bagbin had been withdrawn. This was captured in a letter the Chief of staff of the Ghana Armed Forces wrote to the Speaker, which explained that the four military officers were attached without proper procedure.  The Police have placed a ¢5,000 bounty for information leading to the arrest of a man who was seen in a viral video firing a gun in public. In the video, the man was seen firing an AK 47 several times into the air at A&C Mall, East Legon on December 31, 2021, purportedly to welcome the New Year. In a statement, the Police said the action by the man is against Section 209 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) which barres a person from discharging a firearm in public without lawful and necessary occasion. Two suspects arrested over death of US citizen at hotel in Accra

Police in Accra have arrested two persons in connection with the death of a US national at a hotel room at Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra. The two suspects who are in the custody of the police, are currently assisting with investigations into the matter. The incident is said to have occurred on December 14, 2021, at Rayporsh Hotel, where the deceased, identified as Julie Diane Williams, was found dead. “In line with international best practice, after informing the family of the current state of the investigations, we are now in a position to make public certain details about the case without compromising the ongoing investigations.” "So far, Two people (names withheld) are currently in custody helping police investigations”, the police in a statement disclosed.
