Transport fares up by 15%

Government has increased transport fares across board by 15 per cent.

Commuters across the country should therefore expect to pay more for transportation effective Saturday, 11th July, 2020.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover confirmed the increment to journalists in parliament on Tuesday.

He said “the expected increment would be across board affecting taxis, commercial buses (trotro), long distance vehicles and cargo trucks”.

Explaining the reason for the increment, he said the COVID-19 pandemic has hindered commercial drivers and taxis from loading passengers to full capacity. This increment is therefore to make up for that loss to drivers.

He added that everyone should know that both government and the transport unions have agreed on the 15% therefore notices should be placed at vantage points to that effect.

The deputy minister further said that both drivers and passengers are still to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols. Drivers and passengers should wear nose masks, wash their hands or use hand sanitizers and practice the social distancing as required, he noted.
