Accra floods: Gov’t commits GHS200m to projects - says Deputy Minister

Heavy storms in the mornings coupled with raging tides have caused floods in the capital city

Government is assuring Ghanaians that the incidents of floods in cities, particularly in Accra, will be reduced to the barest minimum as it takes firm steps to deal with the perennial problem.

Speaking Wednesday on current affairs programme, Upfront, Deputy Works and Housing Minister, Eugene Boakye-Antwi, said the government has committed funds to various projects across Accra and other parts of Ghana.

“We started about three months ago by de-silting, major drains such as the Odaw and Korle lagoons, the Nima drains…the South Kaneshie drain, the Sukura drain…Kaneshie First light, Odorkor drains among others,” he said.

The assurance by the Deputy Minister comes on the back of severe flooding in parts of Accra on Monday, June 18 after heavy late evening rains.

The country was gripped by the story of a young female physician who drowned in the flood waters while returning home from work.

Dr. Aya Hayfron, a medical doctor who recently completed her horsemanship at Ridge Hospital, died when her saloon vehicle was swept away by rapid flood waters.

Four other persons who live around areas hit by the floods remain missing, Greater Accra Regional NADMO Coordinator, Archibald Cobinah, told Joy News on Tuesday.

Commenting on the sad situation, Mr Boakye-Antwi said there is a lot of de-silting and excavation going on across the country but it is unfortunate Dr Aya Hayfron and the other victims met their untimely death.

"In terms of commitment from government, about 200 million Ghana cedis has been committed to these projects: 5 million towards de-silting, 195 million towards excavation projects which will commence very shortly, just after the rains.”

He said the floods on Monday could have been worse if not for the many de-silting projects undertaken many months prior to the onset of heavy rains in June.

More rains

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has warned, the country could be experiencing heavy rains between June and end of July.
