Pregnant prisoner granted bail

AN EIGHT-MONTH-OLD pregnant woman incarcerated at the Nsawam Prisons has been granted a GH¢ 10, 000.00 bail with one surety under the ‘Justice For All’ programme.

Adjoa Hellen Bimpong has spent three months in custody with her pregnancy after she was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

The 21-year-old is accused of conspiring with the husband to kill their two-year-old son who was born deformed.

The woman, according to the facts, was arrested at Akroso by the Oda Police in February 2018 and charged with conspiracy to commit murder at the Oda Magistrate Court.

She was admitted to the Nsawam Prison on March 10, 2018 and has since remained in custody without trial.

The accused person, who applied for bail when the ‘Justice For All’ programme team stormed the Nsawam Prisons, was granted the bail. The team also granted bail to some remand prisoners.

Miss Bimpong told the court that her case had been adjourned four times with the last court appearance date being March 27.

The applicant explained that she had been cohabitating with Richard Arhinful and had two kids by him.

She said one of the children was born sick and cried most of the time. She said on that fateful day, the child started crying and Richard beat the child to stop crying but Miss Bimpong intervened.

She explained that later that morning, she was informed by Richard that the child was dead and he (Richard) threatened her not to say a word to family members about what had happened.

The applicant said Richard and two others secretly buried the child without informing the police.

She explained that she kept mute out of fear but informed her family three days later and that her uncle reported the incident to the police. The suspects were subsequently arrested.

Ms Bimpong averred that three others were granted bail while she was remanded, and explained that she had not been granted bail and so had remained on remand without trial.

The court, presided over by Justice Clemence Honyenuga, a Court of Appeal judge, said the accused was granted bail on the grounds that she was heavily pregnant.

The court said after delivery she should report to the police until the case is finally disposed off.
