A/R: 8,873 teenage pregnancies recorded in 2018

A total of 8,873 teenage pregnancies were recorded at various health facilities in the Ashanti Region between January and June 2018, the Ghana Health Service has disclosed.

6,269 teenagers according to the directorate delivered within the same period.

Dr. Akwasi Yeboah-Awudzi, Regional Deputy Health Director in charge of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service (GHS) said 192 out of the number that delivered at the various health facilities, were below 15 years.

Dr. Yeboah-Awudzi said this at the 2018 Adolescent Health Ambassadors Camp organized by the GHS in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) held in Kumasi on Tuesday, August 7.

He said the number has seen a significant decrease as compared to last year’s 18,066 teenage pregnancies; 12,723 deliveries and 254 under-15 deliveries within the same period.

He said the directorate has targeted zero teenage pregnancy in the region.

He appealed to stakeholders to join in the fight against the increasing spate of teenage pregnancies in the region.

This year’s event was on the theme: ‘Equipping young people as health ambassadors for sustainable development’.
